Visual literacy in the Middle Ages


Illuminated manuscripts at the Getty Museum- not completely on topic, I know... but look at these marvelous books!

The handmade quality was striking- each page a unique work. Pencil lines and borders used in composition are clearly visible.

I found myself crouched and craned to see their construction. Peering around the spine, checking the stitching and the trimming... nothing like days of gluing back together well used library texts to instill great admiration for a tome that has lasted the ages.
